E-waste represents a major environmental problem, as well as a business opportunity of increasing significance, given the volumes of e-waste being generated and the content of both toxic and valuable materials in them.
The majority of e-waste is composed of heavy metals, including highly toxic lead, mercury, copper and aluminium. These metals are extremely poisonous when burned or recycled in uncontrolled environments, leading to widespread human contact through soil contamination, water pollution and gaseous emissions. Currently, companies export 80 percent of the world’s electronic trash to Asia and Africa, where unprotected workers – including children – are exposed to extremely hazardous chemicals while burning electronics in search of precious metals to resell.
